Celebrating Courage, Dedication, and Outstanding Community Service

On October 14, 2026, the Kiwanis Flagler Palm Coast Club proudly hosted its 19th Annual Firefighter of the Year Awards Ceremony, recognizing three exceptional firefighters whose dedication, courage, professionalism, and outstanding service continue to make a positive difference throughout Flagler County.

The annual ceremony brought together Kiwanis members, fire department leadership, firefighters, and community supporters to celebrate the men and women who devote their lives to protecting our citizens and communities.

This year’s ceremony recognized outstanding individuals representing three local fire departments:

  • City of Palm Coast Fire Department
  • Flagler County Fire Rescue
  • City of Flagler Beach Fire Department

These dedicated first responders serve our communities 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether responding to fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, hurricanes, floods, or other dangerous situations, they demonstrate remarkable courage and commitment to public safety.

The History and Importance of Fire Prevention and Firefighter Recognition

During the ceremony, Frank Consentino, who chaired and helped coordinate the event, shared historical information about Fire Prevention Week and the importance of recognizing firefighters for their service and sacrifices.

National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge issued a presidential proclamation establishing its annual national observance.

The Kiwanis awards ceremony followed National Fire Prevention Week, making the occasion especially meaningful as an opportunity to emphasize fire prevention, community education, and firefighter safety.

Consentino also reflected on the importance of honoring firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. He acknowledged the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where families, colleagues, and communities gather annually to remember fallen heroes.

Drawing from personal experiences involving devastating fires within his own family, as well as his firefighting training while serving in the United States Navy, Consentino emphasized the dangers firefighters face and the importance of fire safety education.

His message served as a powerful reminder that firefighting is not for the faint of heart and that every firefighter deserves the community’s respect, gratitude, and appreciation.

Fire Chief Mike Tucker Addresses the Ceremony

The program included remarks from Fire Chief Mike Tucker of Flagler County Fire Rescue, who was invited to share information about local fire rescue operations, public safety, and the importance of fire prevention awareness.

The participation of local fire chiefs provided an opportunity to highlight the achievements and exceptional contributions of the three 2026 award recipients.
